It seems only yesterday I was just running barefoot on the street, playing taya-tayaan with my friends, going to my neighbor’s house for bahay-bahayan, fighting the sleepiness during siesta, and playing pogs, teks, and Chinese garter until my mom called me home for dinner. I did not know it then, but it was such a privilege being a child. Sometimes, I wish I could travel back in time and be stuck there forever, but everybody needs to grow up, even if it sucks (sometimes).
But my coming-of-age story is unlike the ones I saw in movies or T.V shows growing up. It is not sneaking out to a friend's house to party and drink beers out of red Solo cups. Not standing on the back of a pickup truck while it goes through a tunnel. Not vandalizing a school’s cubicle walls. Not even a first kiss or a high school sweetheart.
My coming-of-age story is makipagsiksikan and tumayo in a bus during rush hour, and hoping one day I’d leave the Philippines and live in a country that has walkable streets so that I would never commute again.
My coming-of-age was high school. Crying because I don’t know where I belong. Laughing again because I finally found my people. Maligo sa ulan and bahain because my friends and I did not know that there was a typhoon approaching. Kumain ng samgyup after exams because we “deserve” it. Going out to malls and window shopping for things we cannot afford while saying to ourselves, “Someday, mabibili ko rin ‘yan.”
My coming-of-age is the uncertainty of everything. I don’t know what will happen to me after high school or college. I don’t know what kind of person I will become. I don’t know if I will still be close with my friends 10 or 20 years from now. All I know is we would all chase our dreams, and life will change us somehow.
My coming-of-age is yearning for teenage years like the ones I saw in Hollywood movies. But I know that the story I have is also so full of life. I filled it alongside my family and friends with enough blood, sweat, and tears. And laughter, a great deal of laughter to make it a story that is worth remembering and sharing. What a privilege it is to live in this story. What privilege it is to experience.
To the people who were a part of my story, thank you and I love y’all so much!
Siempre,
Love,
Callie
